Threads 52: Making a rush hat
Continuing our theme of hats this summer, you can make a hat using rushes.
I have found that it is much easier to make a rush hat with fine rushes rather than thick ones as they make a lighter more comfortable hat.
The rushes dry out quite quickly in the summer, so keep a water sprayer handy and keep the unused rushes covered under a towel.
Instructions
For this hat I used 12 stakes at least 30 inches long. Center the stakes and begin with a 12/12 start.
Open out the stakes slowly using pairing with fine rushes.
Use a hat form, (threads number 50) and continue down to the brim and add bi-stakes if necessary, such as when you want to make a wide brim.
Work out to the edge of the brim and finish with a behind, in front, behind, in front border; then tuck in the ends.
