Threads 45: A basket makers treasure

For a willow basket maker there is only one tool that is indispensable. Nothing will take its place. It has to be sharp and it must not get lost. This treasure has several names, rose pruners, secateurs, or pruning shears.

There are basically two different types. One is called an anvil pruner and the other by-pass pruner. The anvil (shown on left in the photo) is usually heavier, and the top blade presses down onto the lower part cutting the material at right angles. If the blade is not sharp all the pressure squashes the material rather than making a clean cut. This type is not useful for cutting basket materials.

We use the by-pass type (shown in the middle and right in the photo). These have two blades which cross over, snipping the willow rod cleanly in half. They are available in different sizes, practicality, and for both left and right handed folk. Although it is tempting to buy a cheaper pair, your secateurs are the most useful tool and must be sharp and easy to use. Felco brand is highly recommended, expensive but well worth it.

They need to be kept clean and well oiled. I once had a sharpening kit for mine which my husband used. You can also make a holster and keep them on your waist when out collecting willow (see next Threads).' The most important thing is not to lose them! I recently looked in Amazon to see their stock. There were 80 types listed! But no Felco. I did find them in the Lee Valley catalog, in several varieties and sizes.
