Threads 6: Gathering Grapevine
Now is the perfect time for gathering grapevine. The leaves have blown away, the weather is beautiful and the snow has not yet arrived.
I thought I would share my grapevine gathering experiences.
First, a word of caution, be careful if you are collecting grapevine from dead trees because they can fall over on you! Grapevine on the fence lines can be easy, although on chain link or woven fencing the tendrils make it difficult.
Both loppers and pruning shears are good tools, and a pair of gloves helps your hands for pulling.
The best way is to cut the grapevine at the base and just pull. As it goes up the tree or along the fence you have to shake the vine to break the little tendrils (photo 1, 2). Once you have it loosened, pull it back the full length of the piece, and trim off all the little pieces. (photo 3)
I then lie it down in a straight line and add each new piece in the same direction. When you have a nice bunch, it is ready to wrap-up to take home (photo 4,5). The best way is to make a big coil. You do not need a string, just tuck the ends into the coil to keep it together (photo 6).
To keep it supple for as long as possible, keep it in the shade out of the wind and sun. I find the best place is under a tall big spruce tree.
